House of the Week: Queen Anne Victorian on Marengo St.

While browsing Realtor.com over the weekend (yes, I do this for fun), I discovered this stunning house and wanted to share it straight away because the sale is pending and I wanted my fellow dream-home aficionados to get a look at it before it’s delisted.

First off, it blew my mind that this 120 year-old Victorian beauty with 5 bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths, and over 5000 sq. ft. of living space is under a million. Sure, it needs a paint job and some other renovations here and there, but I suspect there might be something else afoot (bad plumbing or electrical?) to warrant such a low price on such a mind-blowingly beautiful house.

Just look at it! Beautiful hardwood floors, transoms, stained glass windows, delicately carved woodwork on the stair, stunning mantles, pocket doors, and that window/reading nook! I can see me curled up in a comfy chaise or overstuffed bench made specifically for that space, reading Murakami and sipping hot tea. Lovely ceiling medallions, wainscoting, those oh-so charming porches and gallery … gah! I NEED it!

Admittedly, there are quirky corners (which I also love) and strange paint jobs and tile work that just don’t agree with me, but there’s so much “wow” that overcomes the “meh.” At $995,900, it’s ridiculously steep to me, but I am curious how much extra dough it would take to make this house glow. It already shines to me, but maybe that’s due to my purple-hued glasses.
