House of the Week: Double on Eagle Street

October 6, 2021 No Comments

Considering I am yet another victim of New Orleans’s infamous slumlords, I’ve found myself once again considering being a home owner. After our first attempt failed almost seven years ago, we’ve been reluctant to try again and resigned ourselves to being lifetime renters. But lo and behold, I just saw […]

House of the Week: Double Shotgun on S. Scott Street

June 30, 2021 No Comments

Before you even think it, I know this place would likely require a lot of work to get it as shiny as it could be, but once again, there’s so much potential! Located less than a block from Mona’s, this Mid-City, two-story Craftsman-like double is nothing if not hyphenated. All […]

House of the week: Double shotgun on Annunciation Street

December 10, 2013 5 Comments

Ever since I moved here, I’ve dreamed of living in and/or owning a double shotgun house. Why a double? I knew that it could be a good investment, the tenant would be paying the majority of my mortgage and well, they just look cool. Plus, I’ve seen owners remodel their […]

Though she was born in the San Francisco Bay Area, Kim Ranjbar felt New Orleans calling her home as soon as she hit puberty. A graduate of granola U (a.k.a. Sonoma State University) with a BA in English and a concentration in Creative Writing, Kim took her passion for the written word and dragged it over 2000 miles to flourish in the city she loves.

After almos years as a transplant β€” surviving hurricanes, levee failures, oil spills, boil water advisories and hipster invasions β€” Kim hopes to eventually earn the status of local and be welcomed into the fold.

I've been so obsessed with making the perfect kimc I've been so obsessed with making the perfect kimchi fried rice, I didn't even think about Chinese (well, the American version) fried rice! Sweet Chinese sausage and broken jasmine rice from @hkmnola, carrots, onion, green onion, garlic, ginger, peas and a few scrambled eggs. The secret is using day old rice from the fridge and a simple sauce of soy, sesame oil, rice wine or vinegar, and lots of pepper. It turned out so good, I not only made it two nights in a row, I'm considering adding a wok to my kitchen arsenal πŸ˜„πŸš #friedrice #alwayslearning #nolaamateurcook

Though I haven't been a California resident for ov Though I haven't been a California resident for over two decades, when I heard @thefishmarkets closed a couple of days ago -- especially the location in my hometown of San Mateo -- I teared up a little. Long gone are the days when a clothes shopping trip with Mom at Fashion Island Mall would culminate in lunch on the waterfront at The Fish Market. Never again will I taste their creamy clam chowder or gratuitously mop the last drops with a buttery slab of San Francisco sourdough. Diving into a whole Main lobster 🦞 , wearing a plastic Fish Market bib, drenching every sweet morsel in clarified butter will have to remain the stuff of birthdays past. Thank you @thefishmarkets for all the memories πŸ™πŸŽ£πŸŸ
