I’m not a heavy fester, I’ve only been to Jazzfest three or four times since moving to this city, but there are still plenty of wonderful reasons to live near the fairgrounds. Like the Garden District there’s a ton of greenspace, lots of parks (both big and small), beautiful trees, and historic homes — the Degas House and Luling Mansion immediately come to mind. There’s also a ton of great restaurants and cafes all within walking distance, places such as 1000 Figs, Liuzza’s by the Track, Santa Fe, Cafe Degas, Lola’s, and Fairgrinds Coffeehouse. It’s a neighborhood I’d more than willingly inhabit.
In my most recent bout of self-torture, I discovered this unassuming Arts & Crafts house on N. Dupre Street, only a few blocks from all of those great places I was just talking about. From the street, one can barely make out the 130-year-old house surrounded by trees, but it’s well-worth a second glance. Just check out the huge porch, gorgeous dark ceiling beams and and columns, original hardwood floors, fireplace mantles, and transoms. From what I see of the kitchen and bathrooms, it needs some work, but it’s still such a beauty! I love the weird little breakfast room tucked between the kitchen and dining room, and the front garden with its little path that splits around what could be a planter for yet another tree or perhaps a small fountain. I can just imagine this home at its best and it makes me a touch giddy.
Listed at $487,000, this 3 bedroom, 2 bath home offers less than 2,000 square feet of living space. While some might say it’s small, it’s the perfect amount of space for two and my eyes are glazed over just fantasizing about what it would be like to live there. While it’s out of my price range, and certainly overpriced considering the work involved, almost everything about it screams my name. It’s really too bad I can’t respond.
