House of the Week: Colonial on Palmer Ave.

Y’all know me! This isn’t my typical flavor dream house, but I have to admit I was filled with shock and awe by the sheer opulence of this insane abode on Palmer Avenue. It’s a gargantuan mansion with over 8,000 square feet of living space, 5 bedrooms, 7 1/2 baths (someone likes to bathe), a terrace, pool, patios, fountains! Good lord! Who lived here?

Though it is a little to close to Loyola University for my taste, it’s also only a block from St. Charles Avenue, and less than two blocks from Audubon Park, which is all kinds of nice. There’s elaborate (maybe too much?) decorative detailing on the walls and ceilings, huge pocket doors, extensive wainscoting, chandeliers a-go-go, fireplace mantles in practically every room . . . I’m out of breath just trying to list the excess. Did you see the dining room? The elaborate mural in said dining room? Inset ceiling panels? Don’t even get me started on the backyard!

This 110-year old beauty is going for the bargain-basement price of $3,380,000. Is this your kind of dream house? It isn’t mine, but I certainly wouldn’t kick it out of bed for eating crackers.
