House of the Week: Craftsman Double on Elmira Avenue

Since my whole life is on da Point these days, I thought I’d take a peek at homes for sale in the neighborhood. Now, I didn’t expect to find much considering Algiers Point is a tiny area to peruse, but I did find something I thought was interesting.

If there’s an open house planned, I’ll scoot the 4-5 blocks over to Elmira Avenue and check it out, but as it is I am pretty impressed. It’s a Craftsman-style double built in 1901 with two bedrooms on each side. The house has retained a lot of original features like built-in bookcases and columns, transoms and fireplace mantles, and old mosaic bathroom tile. I’m particularly enamored of the stained-glass-like front doors and sidelites. That said, I also love the fairly unobtrusive renovations. Granite counters in one kitchen, butcher block in the other (mine!), lots of closet and storage space in the bedrooms, updated bathrooms and a nice deck and detached shed out back.

Listed at $449,900, this duplex is way out of my price range, even though I know renting out half of it would likely pay for most of the monthly mortgage payment. I’ll keep watching it to see if the price drops, but I doubt this one will last very long. She’s a beauty!

*P.S. – I think I have a nostalgic desire for all things purple. Just paint it purple and I’m pretty sure I’d want it.
