House of the Week: Craftsman-inspired cottage on Belleville Street

It’s all too easy to find a gorgeous mansion on Realtor.com to ooh and aah about on my blog, there are so many! But today I felt like a challenge. I wanted to find a house in my price range that I could get excited about. Lo and behold, after much searching, I found this Craftsman-style double-turned-single in Algiers Point.

While this particular home isn’t like the high-end Craftsman-style houses I’ve typically seen, it certainly has most of the features. It’s got a large, covered porch, tapered columns with heavy brick bases, deep roof eaves with visible bracing, centered dormer window, paned doors and windows, and some built-in cabinetry. There’s also a big, brick fireplace and some interesting wainscoting that’s been painted over, original hardwood floors, thick baseboards, and nice molding around the doors and windows.

The kitchen needs help as it was “updated” poorly. I cringe at the thought of what built-ins were removed for the existing cabinetry, but it’s manageable. Thankfully, I can see past the abhorrent interior paint and general crap lying around to see that this could be a beautiful house. What do you think? Would you pay $290,000 for this 3 bedroom, 2 bath, 2400 square foot house?
