Meatless Marvels at Plant Bass Vegan Deli

While I am not a vegan by any stretch of the imagination, I do love to try any and all types of foodstuffs. So when I heard about a new restaurant that just opened a couple of months ago over here on the Westbank, I was more than willing to give it a go. Folks on an Algiers Point Facebook group were already singing praises for Plant Bass Vegan Deli, particularly their hot “sausage” po-boy, and I had to find out why.

Located in Algiers on General Meyer, this little building tucked behind a Texaco station has seen many incarnations. Today, it’s a welcoming, eye-catching, deep cobalt blue with lime green accents and a cute, enclosed, outdoor patio. There’s also a few tables inside, if you can’t take the heat, and no one’s blaming you if you can’t! This is summertime in New Orleans, after all.

It seems there’s always something new to try on the menu, from BBQ “Ribs” to jumbo cupcakes, but when I went, I had to try the hot “sausage” po-boy. Though it couldn’t have been sausage, it could’ve fooled me! It was spicy, juicy and more meaty than I imaged a soy or pea-protein po-boy could be. It came with vegan cheese (something else I’d never had before) and was fully dressed on New Orleans-style French bread.

My DC tried the “Mic Drop,” a grilled Beyond Meat burger with grilled onions, vegan cheese and “special sauce.” We also shared an order of thinly sliced, crisp-fried eggplant that came with a tangy, creamy sauce similar to a remoulade. Everything was delicious and the employees/owners were extremely friendly and attentive. Who knew vegan could taste this good? I certainly didn’t, but I do now. I’m anxious for a return trip to try the “Chick Pea of the Sea” tuna salad sandwich, the mushroom po-boy and possibly a cookie or two — if I can get there before they sell out!
